Background Information

The Drawings for Manana were published by "The Rudder" magazine in February of 1945. This version was built for a Adam Otto Horvath of Vancouver by Russel Kellier of North Vancouver in 1946 and was originaly named Lachigan, meaning Sea Bass.

Al Mason was a keen amateur racer and was inspired by the Scandinavian 5.5 metre he owned at that time.

There are similarities between The "Dark Harbour" and Manana. In fact Al Mason spent much of his career at Sparkman & Stephens and loved his job so much, he was known to have designed and drawn hundreds of boats in his spare time.

Like many other wooden boat owners I started out with good intentions. Aiming for high standards, perhaps, at times forgetting my ineptitude with tools ( I had never used a power saw before starting the job but as the great Pete Culler once said, "experience starts the day you begin") So one of the lessons to have been learnt during the project would be, aim high and be happy whatever the outcome. Much of my work has left a lot to be desired, Eric will vouch for that. Nevertheless this boat is so pretty, how much damage have I really done. At least noone has said, "he sets himself exceedingly low standards but unfortuately fails to acheive them".
